Career counselling is not a therapy or medical treatment. Many times parents get confused. This is just a information exchange between counsellor and student and in turn counsellor give advice which includes exploring different type of careers, different pathways to get those careers, skills required etc. Career counselling is a advice giving process related with career development.
Career awareness is a process to make students aware of different types of careers available and how those can be achieved. This also includes sharing the skills, interest, personality and aptitude required for the respective careers.
Career guidance is one step ahead of career awareness which includes assessing students ability to do well in which type of career or career cluster by assessing student's interest, personality and aptitude using either informal or formal assessment test.
Ideally Career awareness should be given to students from Class 7 onwards and Career guidance from Class 9 onwards.
Career counselling should be given to all students. This will enhance their success percentage many fold.
No preparation is required for career counselling. Just attend the session with your child with positive attitude and open for suggestions.
